The Copyright Royalty Board (or the formal authority in charge of setting royalty rates for mechanical liceneses, etc.) have ruled that there shall be a mechanical royalty rate for ringtones of .24 cents per track, effective through 2012. It is still uncertain as to when this will actually take affect, but sources say they do expect it to become practice sooner than later. This is a historic change in the world of ringtone licensing as royalty rates were previously negotiated between ringtone content providers and publishers under the umbrella of industry standard rates at the given time of licensing (often times lower than $.24 cents). How will this affect the retail prices consumers pay for ringtones given the increase in royalties to be paid out to the publishers? Time will tell.
